Crewley › Honest AI

The Honest AI position

Voice AI today is impressively good and still noticeably artificial. Crewley is built on the idea that a caller might notice, not that they won't. Being honest about what the system can and can't do is the point, not a caveat added later.

What it does instead of guessing

Four habits you'll see every day.

  1. It says it may be automatedEvery voice agent says so in the greeting, in your practice's own words, every time.
  2. It asks when two records matchTwo patients with the same surname get a question, never a guess.
  3. It says when nothing happenedA reply in the wrong place gets "nothing has been actioned" instead of silence that looks like success.
  4. It admits when it isn't sureIf it can't confirm something saved, it says "check the system before telling the patient".

Your phone, your choice

It protects your team's conversations.

Each practice decides how much of the phone the AI takes. At Winstanley & Son it's a safety net: a team member answers within a few rings during opening hours, and the AI only picks up when that hasn't happened. Some practices use it as a filter, or to answer everything. Callers will know, and some will mind, so the trade-off is said out loud.

In detail

The lines it won't cross.

Can callers tell they're talking to AI?

In our opinion, no voice agent on the market today is undetectable, ours included. It will happen eventually. Until it does, saying a call may be automated is the honest thing to do.

What happens if a call turns clinical?

Software that triages symptoms or makes a clinical recommendation can be a medical device under UK rules. The voice agent's rule stays well clear of that line: if a call turns clinical, it stops, takes a number and tells the caller to contact 111 or A&E. It never tries to triage.

Is there an approval body for AI on patient records?

No UK body currently approves the use of AI on patient records in general. The honest question is what evidence a practice could show that it was done responsibly: a signed DPIA, a documented processor list, a clear retention schedule and a named person in the loop. That groundwork is part of the build.

Does the demo behave better than the real thing?

No. Every refusal runs the same way in a demo as it does live at Winstanley & Son, because it's the same system. We publish our failures as well as our results, including the Oakley incident.

Where do clinical records go?

Nowhere. They stay in your practice management software. Crewley runs messages, bookings, orders, recalls and reports. See how it works.
